Today (August 7) I had the great pleasure of interviewing entertainer, radio host and author Steve Harvey here in Chicago at the Harold Washington Cultural Center in Bronzeville. He is participating in the 2009 Bud Billiken Day Parade on Saturday, August 8th. Bud Billiken is the largest annual Black back-to-school celebration in the nation.

I asked him about his mentoring program recently featured on CNN, and some other things that you'll read about once the forthcoming interview is published. We had some good laughs!

Impressive photo. It would serve well to be prominently placed on the FCN homepage, would you agree?

May Allah continue to bless you my Brother. I look forward to the interview.

I always hear “But how do you keep up with the world?”
I don’t. That’s the point.
The Minister once (probably more than once said) “You’ve got to get the garbage cleaned out before you can put the truth in it.”
And to tell you the truth getting clean is probably the best thing I’ve ever done in my 27-years on this planet.
I’ve never touched alcohol, smoked anything or had sex with anyone, so you might be wondering what exactly I gave up?
The answer to that question is television. Al hamdo lillahh! TV radio and other forms of mass media, don’t live here in my NYC A-P-T no more.
So with that being removed, I was given the spirit—the inner motivation to read.
Sound familiar?
And what’s the one thing that I can’t escape—even if all I have is $1.00 in my bag? THE FINAL CALL. And I’m not even a registered or formal member of The Nation but you
can catch me at Columbus Circle once a week scrounging for change in my backpack. I get it. I skim through it. I mean I treat this thing the way teenagers treat those teeny magazines. I even have favorite parts. The Final Call is the only paper that will leave you questioning how many times you ate today, your true knowledge of self, history and true understanding of the poor often voiceless people of color around the globe. I can spell "Ahmadinejad" thanks to The Final Call. And while that may sound unimportant—little things like that make me proud—because I got to read this man’s words from the U.N.Durban II Anti-Racism Conference—only because The Final Call had the testicular fortitude to publish them. And from there I got to make an informed decision—not a decision based on a news corporations already set opinion of a man. Yes I’m detoxing quite nicely from the years of poison that I subjected myself to by just turning on the TV or radio. The Final Call (al hamdo lillahh) is my help.
But what makes me even prouder is that when my mom, cousin and I descended upon Chicago last month for an all-girl-getaway we found ourselves at noon walking taller stepping outside of Mosque Maryam—talk about a far step from our Gold Coast hotel and travel brochure suggestions. Two days before, as we met each other inside O’Hare International I told these two Southern women that Sunday was non-negotiable. And it was. We went to Mosque Maryam—thanks to the grace of God. Thanks to the connection this little New Yorker made with the Nation through The Final Call. You know what they say, if you can make it there [NYC] you can make it anywhere, well I’m here to testify—that you can be in New York City but it’s free will if it be in you. I thank Allah, I thank His coming in the person of Master Fard Muhammad, I thank the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad, I thank Minister Farrakhan. I thank you…One more thing let me tell you what my little Southern, Catholic-turned-Methodist church raised mama said to me on a call with me the other day. She said, “When I come to New York we’re going to the mosque.”
As-Salaam Alaikum. P.S. Thanks to The Final Call, I know how to spell that [As-Salaam Alaikum] too!
