President Obama's Secret Service & Ground Transportation

Cadillac One

Cadillac One "The Beast"

Ground transportation by limousine is a presidential tradition. A new model is built and customized for each president prior to his taking office. President Obama will be transported in a Cadillac limousine, an ultramodern yet brawny vehicle that has been nicknamed "The Beast."

Many of the vehicle’s security specifications are kept confidential however it is reported to have five-inch thick bulletproof windows, run-flat tires and a sealed interior for protection in the event of a chemical attack. The heavily armored body—made of reinforced steel, aluminum and titanium—is said to be capable of withstanding a rocket propelled grenade attack.

Secret Service Protection

The United States Secret Service is charged with protecting the sitting president and his immediate family 24 hours day. Code names are given to the First Family. At one time, the names were used for security prior to the invention of encryption. Now, the code names serve more as a tradition. President Barack Obama’s codename is "Renegade," First Lady Michelle Obama is "Renaissance," 10-year old Malia is "Radiance" and 7-year-old Sasha is "Rosebud."

The personal 24 hour security detail extends for 10 years after the completion of the presidential term, however, with increasing terrorism, and increasing threats, Congress is reconsidering lifetime protection.

On January 20, 2009 Barack Hussein Obama’s improbable path to the presidency of the United States of America will be completed. The son of a Black man from Kenya and a White woman from Kansas whose childhood found him places like Hawaii and Indonesia, whose educational career carried him to Occidental College, Harvard University and Columbia.

His professional career found him as a professor at the University of Chicago Law School, and his career as an activist brought him to the tough gritty streets of the south side of Chicago. Now, this seemingly unlikely path has taken him to The White House in Washington D.C.

Over the next few days during my stay in Washington, D.C. while covering the inauguration for The Final Call, I will be updating my blog, doing my best to bring you some of the sights and happenings of this historic event. I will also answer any questions you may have.

The president is the Chief Executive Officer of the United States of America and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. On Jan. 20 after taking the Oath of Office Barack H. Obama will become this nation's 44th president.
