CHICAGO—The 2-year anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear disaster March 11th provided a sobering reminder of the dangers of radiation, however, another source of harmful radiation is not located halfway around the world, in fact, it’s closer than you might think.

An informative yet quite disturbing seminar was recently held at the Chicago Hilton Hotel during Nation of Islam's 2013 Saviours’ Day convention titled “Electromagnetic Pollution: The Danger of Electronic Devices.

Presenter Dawn Muhammad answered many questions regarding an area being discussed with increasing frequency, especially with the technological advancements and wide range of electronic devices available worldwide. 

EMF pollution is the term given to all the man-made electromagnetic fields with homes, offices and public spaces. Quite frankly, there’s no way to escape them since they are emitted from anything that is powered by electricity. Basically, the only way to avoid EMF pollution is to walk around with a lead body suit. Many are unaware of how much radiation they are exposed to regularly during their routine daily activities.

“What I need you to understand is all this is silent,” said Muhammad. “What you don’t see won’t hurt you is a lie. It’s hurting you non-stop constantly,” she added. 

Outdoor power lines, alarm clock radios, computers, televisions, microwave ovens, cordless telephones, wireless headsets, global positioning systems in vehicles are just some EMF emitters that most are familiar with.  

“Your body is being bombarded by EMFs,” said Muhammad. “You’re being blitzed by all the EMFs—radiation—let’s just call it what it is.” 

According to the World Health Organization, there are an estimated 4.6 billion cell phone being used worldwide and the electromagnetic fields produced by mobile phones are classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as possibly carcinogenic (cancer causing) to humans.

There are nearly 330 million active cell phone in the United States of America and all are emitting various levels of Electromagnetic Field pollution, the long term effects of which are not yet fully known.

“When you’re driving in your car, your GPS system is wireless, your cell phone is wireless, your radio is wireless, your kids are in the back texting and some of you are on the phone talking and the windows are shut tight, those rays have nowhere to go, so they’re swimming around in the car. It’s like sitting in a microwave oven,” she said. 

For those with Wi-Fi connections in the home, several cell phones for each family member and televisions in various parts of the home,  “You are producing an EMF soup in your home,” Sis. Dawn told the audience.

Here are some other things about EMF pollution she covered:

- Men who carry their cell phones near the groin, in a pocket or even a belt holster could potentially reduce sperm count by as much as 30 percent.

- A cordless phone base station placed two feet from the head and plugged in for three minutes at a time could significantly disrupt heart rhythm, leading to increases in heart rates, possible arrhythmias and other fluctuations in heart rate.

- Children because of their smaller heads, thinner skulls and not yet fully developed brains should not use cell phones, except in an emergency.

- It is believed that 30 percent of all childhood cancers come from exposure to EMF’s.

The small print of the electronic devices indemnifies the companies from liability regarding possibly harmful effects caused by their products, however, increasingly, legislation is being passed requiring companies to list the Specific Absorption Rate, which measures the rate at which energy is absorbed by the human body when exposed to a radio frequency electromagnetic field.

“The Honorable Elijah Muhammad did us a favor. The navy bean when he told us to eat it…the navy bean has a component in it, amongst other things, that helps guard against radiation,” said Ms. Muhammad. “Master Fard Muhammad came and gave us what he gave us for a reason.”
